Camp is one of the best things you can give a kid. A summer of friends, fresh air, color war, and letters home written in handwriting you can barely read. If you're able to send, it's a gift — for them and, let's be honest, for you.
It's also expensive. Not in a "someone's chasing labels" way — in a plain, unavoidable way. The tuition is the tuition. But then there's the duffel list, and the duffel list has a way of quietly doubling the number you had in your head. It isn't the one fancy thing that gets you. It's nine tee shirts, and five pairs of shorts, and the sheets, and the towels, and the name labels, and the bug spray, and the third pair of shoes — each one reasonable on its own, all of it adding up to a number that makes you put the calculator down.
You don't have to be a brand chaser to want your kid to walk into that bunk and just feel normal. That's the whole thing. Normal adds up.
